Simple Ways to Connect with God Throughout the Day

Simple Ways to Connect with God Throughout the Day

For decades, I’ve started my mornings by spending a few quiet minutes reading the Bible and praying. I’m naturally a morning person, and I desire to seek the Lord and His direction daily. Setting aside 15–30 minutes each morning for devotions has always felt natural and doable to me—even in busy seasons of life or challenging times.

But over the last few years, I’ve found myself hungering for more.

I still deeply love my time of Bible reading, prayer, and journaling in my Seek First Journal. It grounds me and helps set my heart on Jesus before the day begins. But without realizing it, I had unintentionally compartmentalized my connection with God into one specific time slot each day.

In reality, He is always with us, continually inviting us to commune with Him throughout the day.

So I began incorporating a few simple habits into my daily rhythms. These practices don’t feel like “more things to do” added onto an already full schedule. Instead, they create intentional moments throughout the day to pray, worship, reflect, read Scripture, and simply become more aware of God’s presence.

Here are a few simple habits—beyond your daily quiet time—that can help you connect with God throughout the day and become more attentive to His presence and leading.

1. Start the Day with a Simple Prayer of Thanks

Every morning when I wake my daughter up to start the day, I give her a big hug and pray the same simple prayer:

“Lord, thank You for this new day and for loving us. Help us to love You and love one another. Amen.”

It’s a simple way to begin the day with my heart focused on what—and who—matters most. And my daughter gets to grow up participating in this daily rhythm and learning how to begin each day in prayer.

2. Pray Before the First Meeting or Errand

For me, this often happens during my daughter’s school drop-off.

Before she heads into school and I begin my workday, we take a moment to pray together—for her day at school and for my day ahead. It’s a simple reminder that we can bring our needs to the Lord and trust Him to provide our daily bread.

And honestly? It only adds about two minutes to our morning routine.

3. Keep Scripture Visible Throughout the Day

I use our Seek First 52 Scripture Card Set to meditate on and memorize a Bible verse each week. I place the weekly Scripture card in the wooden holder on our dining room table beside the centerpiece.

Since I work from home and often take meetings in that space, I see the verse throughout the day. As our family gathers around the table for meals, we all get to read and reflect on it together.

It’s such a simple way to renew my mind with truth and treasure God’s Word in my heart.

4. Choose Silence Over Noise

Sometimes I intentionally choose silence instead of filling every moment with music, podcasts, or scrolling.

I may work out without headphones, take a quiet walk around the neighborhood after lunch, or drive in silence while picking my daughter up from school.

These moments create space for reflection and help me become more aware of what’s been bringing me joy and what’s been weighing me down. I often find myself praying quietly and inviting the Holy Spirit to speak to me in the stillness.

5. Talk About God Around the Dinner Table

At dinner, try asking your spouse, family, or kids a simple question that helps connect your hearts to both God and one another.

Questions like:

  • “What’s one thing you want to thank God for today?”
  • “What’s something God has been teaching you recently?”
  • “What was your high and low from the day?”

These conversations help us grow closer as a family while also keeping Jesus at the center of our home. Through simple, organic moments, we can thank Him, encourage one another, and pray together.

6. Worship While You Work

One of my favorite rhythms is playing worship music while preparing breakfast or dinner.

Singing along to a worship song helps shift my focus away from my to-do list, worries, and distractions, and instead turns my heart toward the Lord. Worship has a way of re-centering me and reminding me of what’s true.

7. End the Day in Prayer

Each night, my husband, daughter, and I pray together as part of her bedtime routine.

We thank the Lord for the day, pray for one another, and lift up people we know who need prayer. Our daughter is only four years old, and by bedtime we’re usually all pretty tired, so we keep it simple and sincere.

It’s one final moment to reconnect with God and with each other before ending the day.

Connecting with God throughout the day doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. Often, it’s found in small, intentional moments woven into the ordinary rhythms of life.

The goal isn’t perfection or checking another spiritual box—it’s simply learning to become more aware of His presence right in the middle of your everyday life.
