How to Read the Bible with Friends
Share
Becoming more like Jesus is not a solo journey; spiritual maturity takes place within Christ-centered community.
One of the best ways to walk with Jesus, grow as a disciple, and deepen your relationships is by exploring Scripture together. Jesus called His twelve disciples to follow Him, and it was often through discussion—asking questions, listening, and seeking understanding—that they grew in their knowledge of the Kingdom of God.
Over 2,000 years later, we still need one another. We are called to grow and mature spiritually in community.
So how do you start reading the Bible with your friends—or perhaps your spouse or partner?
It doesn’t have to be complicated or awkward, and you don’t need a seminary degree to talk about the Bible.
Here are some simple ways to begin regularly reading Scripture together:
-
Read the same content individually.
Choose a Bible reading plan, a book of the Bible, or specific chapters to read during your personal time in Scripture and prayer. That way, when you come together, you’re both prepared to reflect and discuss.
-
Set a regular time to meet.
This could be once a week or once a month—whatever works best for your group. Meet at a local coffee shop, around the dinner table, during a lunch break, or even over FaceTime. Keep it consistent and accessible.
-
Start with prayer.
Pray out loud before discussing Scripture. Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your time and deepen your understanding of God’s Word and how to live like Jesus.
-
Keep it simple.
Reread a portion of Scripture together, then ask a few thoughtful questions. Encourage everyone to share what stands out to them or what they relate to.
-
Focus on discussion, not teaching.
Don’t feel pressure to lead a class or preach a sermon. The goal is shared conversation—listening, learning, and discovering new insights together.
-
Let go of performance.
This isn’t about impressing others with what you know. It’s about humility and growth. Our motivation is love—to better understand God’s love and grow in our love for Him and each other. Leave egos at the door and avoid unhelpful debates.
-
Apply what you read.
As your time wraps up, talk about how the Holy Spirit may be leading you to live out what you’ve learned.
-
Pray for one another.
Share needs, concerns, and joys. Take time to pray over each other. We all need this kind of spiritual support and encouragement.
-
Respect the time.
Whether you set aside 45 minutes or an hour and a half, try to stick to it. This helps everyone stay committed and consistent.
