The Power of Monthly Reflection

The Power of Monthly Reflection

Life moves quickly, and if we’re not intentional, it’s easy to forget just how faithfully God is working in and around us. Scripture reminds us again and again to remember: to call to mind what the Lord has done, what He is teaching us, and how He is shaping us over time. Monthly reflection is a simple but powerful way to practice this kind of remembering.

When we pause once a month to reflect, we create space to notice God’s faithfulness, discern His instruction, and celebrate the spiritual growth He is producing in us.

1. Monthly Reflection Reminds Us of God’s Faithfulness

One of our greatest tendencies as humans is forgetting. We forget answered prayers. We forget the ways God has provided, protected, and guided us. We forget how far He has brought us.

Throughout Scripture, God continually calls His people to remember His works—not because He forgets, but because we do.

“Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.”
— Psalm 105:5 (NIV)

Monthly reflection helps anchor our hearts in truth by intentionally looking back and recognizing where God has been moving in our lives over the past 30 days. Even seasons that felt ordinary or difficult reveal God’s steady faithfulness when we pause to reflect.

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.”
— Psalm 77:11 (NIV)

2. Reflection Helps Us Identify What the Lord Is Teaching Us

God is always at work, not only around us but within us. Reflection allows us to ask, “What is the Lord forming in me right now?”

Scripture reminds us that God uses every season to teach, refine, and grow us.

“Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness.”
— Psalm 86:11 (NIV)

As we look back over the month, reflection helps us notice recurring themes and lessons learned through joy, challenge, obedience, or surrender. It trains us to listen for the Spirit’s gentle instruction and respond with humility and faith.

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
— Proverbs 2:6 (NIV)

3. Reflection Gives Us Space to Celebrate Growth and Maturity

Spiritual growth often happens slowly, which makes it easy to overlook. Monthly reflection invites us to pause and recognize how God is shaping us—strengthening our faith, growing our character, and deepening our dependence on Him.

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

Celebrating growth isn’t about pride; it’s about gratitude. When we acknowledge the ways God is maturing us, we give Him glory and are encouraged to continue pressing forward in faith.

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
— Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

Three Simple Questions for Monthly Reflection

If you’re new to monthly reflection, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Journaling once a month using a few intentional questions is a great place to start. These questions help us remember God’s faithfulness, recognize His teaching, and look ahead with hope.

  1. How have you seen God moving in your life in the past 30 days?
  2. What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned?
  3. What are you hoping for in the weeks to come?
