Ways to Read the Bible and Pray with Your Spouse
Share
One of the most powerful things you can do as a Christian couple is to intentionally spend time together in God’s Word and prayer. Not only does this strengthen your personal walk with the Lord, but it also deepens your bond as a couple. When you read the Bible and pray together, you are:
- Inviting the Lord’s leadership and guidance in your relationship.
- Renewing your mind to God’s Word together, keeping Him at the center.
- Growing and maturing in your faith as one.
-
Spending quality time with the Lord and each other, cultivating intimacy both spiritually and relationally.
Here are a few simple and authentic ways to begin:
1. Read a chapter of James together once a week.
Over 5 weeks, take one chapter at a time. After reading, ask each other these four questions:
- What stands out the most to you right now, and why?
- What most encourages you from this chapter, and why?
- What most challenges you from this chapter, and why?
-
What’s one way you are going to apply what we read this week, and how can I support you?
This makes Scripture come alive in your relationship and creates meaningful conversation.
2. Use a Psalm as a prayer prompt.
Choose a psalm, read it together, and then turn it into a prayer. Thank God for His promises, confess where you need His help, and ask Him to guide you in your marriage.
3. Join a couples’ Bible study or small group.
Surround yourself with other couples who are pursuing Jesus. You’ll learn from their experiences, be encouraged in your walk, and grow in community together.
4. Commit to a shared Bible reading plan.
Pick a plan from YouVersion’s Bible App and read individually throughout the week. On date night, share what stood out to each of you and how the Holy Spirit spoke to your hearts.
5. Pray together daily.
It doesn’t have to be long or complicated. Take a few minutes at the beginning or end of the day to pray for one another—your needs, your marriage, and what’s ahead.
Building this rhythm into your relationship will help you grow closer to the Lord and each other in meaningful and lasting ways.
