Why the Gospels Matter: Discovering Jesus and Drawing Closer to God

If you want to know who Jesus truly is, not just historically, but personally, there is no better place to begin than the Gospels.

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the first four books of the New Testament, and together they proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. They tell the story of His life, ministry, death, and resurrection, revealing Him as the Savior who offers forgiveness, restoration, and eternal life. These books are not merely ancient records; they are invitations—to faith, to transformation, and to a deeper walk with God.

The Good News at the Heart of the Gospels

At their core, the Gospels proclaim one powerful message:
Jesus lived, died, and rose again to rescue humanity from sin and bring us back into relationship with God.

Through His words and works, Jesus reveals both His divine authority and His deep compassion. He fulfills God’s promises, demonstrates the power of heaven through miracles, and teaches with wisdom that continues to shape hearts and lives today. The Gospels show us that Jesus is fully God and fully human—able to save, and able to understand us.

One Jesus, Four Perspectives

Although the Gospels tell the same true story, each writer emphasizes a different aspect of who Jesus is, helping us see Him more fully.

  • Matthew presents Jesus as the promised Messiah and King, showing how He fulfills Old Testament prophecy and establishes the Kingdom of Heaven.
  • Mark portrays Jesus as the suffering servant and powerful Son of God, moving quickly through His actions and highlighting His sacrifice.
  • Luke emphasizes Jesus as the compassionate Savior for all people, especially the poor, the outcast, and the overlooked.
  • John offers a deeply theological portrait of Jesus as the eternal Son of God, calling readers to believe and receive eternal life.

Matthew, Mark, and Luke (often called the Synoptic Gospels) share many overlapping stories, while John provides a more reflective, spiritual lens. Together, they form a rich, unified testimony of who Jesus is and why He matters.

Walking With Jesus Through the Story

As you read the Gospels, you follow Jesus through every stage of His ministry:

  • Calling ordinary people to follow Him
  • Teaching profound truths through parables
  • Healing the sick and restoring the broken
  • Challenging religious pride and hypocrisy
  • Laying down His life on the cross
  • Rising victoriously from the grave

Each Gospel places special emphasis on Passion Week: Jesus’s betrayal, trial, crucifixion, burial, and resurrection— because this is the heart of God’s redemptive plan.

An Invitation to Discipleship

The Gospels are not written as detached, journalistic accounts. They are theological biographies, carefully shaped to inspire faith, obedience, and transformation. Their purpose is not only to inform us about Jesus, but to invite us to follow Him.

As you spend time in the Gospels, you learn how Jesus loves, how He prays, how He serves, and how He calls His followers to live. You begin to see God’s heart more clearly, and to align your life more closely with His will.

Start Reading, Start Growing

Whether you are new to Scripture or returning with fresh eyes, reading the Gospels is a powerful way to grow closer to God. Through them, Jesus speaks and is still teaching, still calling, still offering life.

If your desire is to know Jesus more deeply, to walk in His teachings, and to seek God first, let the Gospels be your guide. They are good news not only to be believed, but to be lived.
